Financial Planning - “SMART 529” WV Pre-Paid College Fund Program – Coordinate with WV State Treasurer’s Office to present program on how to prepare, plan, and save for your child or grandchild’s college educations.

Mind, Body & Spirit Fair -organize an alternative health fair to provide employees alternative health and wellness options within the community.  Consider addressing acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractors, exercise physiology, holistic nutrition, alternative skin treatments, and organically grown food options.

January or MONTH 1 - National Blood Donor Month - organize a blood drive through the American Red Cross; National Glaucoma Awareness Month - provide glaucoma screenings for employees

February or MONTH 2 - Heart Health Month - organize a "Heart Truth for Women"lunch and learn or a "Go Red for Women"
and kick off the month with a healthy breakfast; free BP, glucose and cholesterol screenings, along with information on prevention of heart disease in women, understanding heart disease and ways to control hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking cessation and blood sugar control; Wise Health Consumer Month - utilize WCWV staff to provide instructions for your employees on the Wellsource database on Council's website; Great American Spit Out (smokeless tobacco) - offer a free tobacco cessation class from the WCWV.

March or MONTH 3 - National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, March 7-13;  National Colorectal Awareness Month; National Poison Prevention Month; National Kick Butts Day (3/24);

April or MONTH 4 -
Support the fight against heart disease by participating in National Start! Walking Day on Wednesday, April 8. START! Walking Program - The American Heart Association’s Start! Walking Program helps your company encourage employees to live healthier, happier lives. And when company leaders make health a priority and show their commitment, employees follow.  Get a free, downloadable National Start! Walking Day Tool Kit that includes materials to easily promote National Start! Walking Day in your workplace and provides tips on how to make the day a success.  

May or MONTH 5 - Skin Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a month used to encourage and remind people to take preventive measures while they enjoy various outdoor activities.  Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. This type of cancer can almost completely be avoided if people would protect their skin and follow simple guidelines when they are outside.  For information about skin cancer or how to be sun safe this spring or summer, visit the American Cancer Society Sun Safety pages

June  or MONTH 6 - National Home Safety Month -
educate and motivate families to take actions to increase the safety of their homes. You can help spread the word by joining the Hands on Home Safety Campaign. It's easy! Visit www.homesafetycouncil.org for some great ideas; National Men's Health Month (6/14-20) - celebrate Men's Health Month by organizing a "Wear BLUE" event - host a  sporting event, informational speakers, BBQ or picnic, or a simple BLUEjean day at work.  Download tools from the WearBLUE website

July or MONTH 7 - International Massage Week (7/18-24) - arrange for local massage therapists or students to give on-site chair massages;
UV Safety Month -It's summertime; the sun is bright and there is a great danger the sun can harm the eyes. Everyone is at risk for eye damage that can lead to vision loss from exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. So, use this month's tools to spread the message of sun, fun and safety to your employees. Visit www.aao.org (American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives) for more information and ideas.
 

August or MONTH 8 - National Cataract Month - visit the National Eye Institute for a list of resources to help offer cataract screenings. Medic Alert Awareness Month; National Immunization Awareness Month

September or MONTH 9 - Fruit & Veggie Month;
Back School - Arrange for chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists to provide chair massages, traction table demonstrations, vitamin/mineral analysis, digital foot scans and stress analysis, free of charge. Prostate Health Month - offer PSA screenings to male employees

October or MONTH 10 -
Drug Free Workplace Week (10/19-25) - WCWV offers employee programs on “Parents, Families and Work” (a program to identify employer costs due to substance impaired employees and the emotional costs of family abuse issues that affect employees); American Heart Walk; National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - participate in one of the many walks occurring this month to benefit breast cancer awareness.

November or MONTH 11 - Great American Smokeout - plan a lunch and learn with WCWV on smoking cessation.  The Council can assist with kick-off events and exhibits for the 3rd Thursday in November.  Reserve Council participation early because of limited availability. 
National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month arrange a monthly speaker from the local Alzheimer's Association group to discuss brain health or resources for the "sandwich" generation. 

December or MONTH 12 - Weight Watchers at Work - organize and track weight loss for employees.  Consider video conferencing or conference calls to include satellite facilities or off-site employees. Market this as a "getting ready for the new year." Grief Counseling - Offer all employees who have suffered the loss of an immediate relative within the past year the opportunity to attend a grief seminar to held deal with the loss during the holidays.  Counselors, outside therapists, co-workers and even clergy can participate by providing guidance and support.  The agenda can include reflection, prayer, music, grief presentation, and craft, such as a memory candle.  Contact your health insurance EAP provider for resources.
