     Wellness2Go!

The WCWV would like to provide its members with a turn key wellness design for all business.  The Council promotes the P.A.P.E.R. concept for enacting results oriented wellness interventions:

Prepare; Assess; Plan; Enact; Review

Please Read All Instructions in their entirety.

PREPARE:   Senior management, middle management and supervisors should be made aware of the plan to implement wellness programming or change the current wellness layout.  Supervisors of all levels should have some sort of responsibility for a part or parts of the program

ASSESS:   Set about collecting and evaluating the needs and interests of your employees

PLAN:   Develop a written wellness plan with SMART objectives.  (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time Sensitive)

ENACT:   Put into place interventions and programming that is relevant to your population

REVIEW:   Evaluate the program for effectiveness

The National Excellence in Worksite Wellness (N.E.W.W.) Award recognizes results-oriented wellness programs.  The N.E.W.W. Award is presented at four levels:  Bronze; Silver; Gold and Platinum - depending on the number and type of interventions represented in the final application, the company's rationale for implementing these programs and tracking results.

Prepare  (Note examples and attachments in the appendix below)

Before the year starts or at the very beginning of the year, have the CEO send a memo to employees announcing the wellness initiative, stating up-coming assessments & how they will be used & generally stating how important the employees are to the organization.

Assess

January (or Month 1) - (Note:  consult Appendix for National Health Observance Calendar and Wellness Activity Planner from American Institute Preventative Medicine for each month & possible program suggestions and contacts.  Wellness Council program outlines are also available at Resources tab.)

Direct employees complete an abbreviated Health Risk Assessment, Needs & Interest Survey & Culture Audit, taking care to keep your employees data confidential.  The Wellness Council has resources to assist your wellness team in collating data and providing aggregate information to your Wellness Team.

General wellness interventions can take place while the assessment and planning process is occurring.  There are always general health issues or national health observances that are relevant to most populations.  By no means should interventions be postponed while the assessment and planning process is completed. Across the nation, heart attack, stroke and high cholesterol are topics that affect nearly every family.

Plan

End of January/Beginning of February (or end of Month 1/beginning of Month 2) - Taking information from the assessment tools completed in the prior month, the Wellness Team should develop a written wellness plan for the remainder of the plan year.)  Complete Section C of the N.E.W.W. Award Application and Section D of the N.E.W.W. Award Application.

During the first year of a wellness program, 1-2 programs per month are optimal.  The Wellness Team can choose the top 3-5 health issues found in the assessment tools and begin setting priorities.  The Wellness Plan Matrix in the Appendix can be used to assure that objectives remain SMART.

Programs should consist of a variety of formats including awareness (flyers and posters, etc); educational (lunch & learns, speakers, etc.); and behavior change (walking program, tobacco cessation, weight loss, etc.).

Post the completed Matrix in a common area along with the list of top health issues found in the assessment tools.  This keeps the process transparent & lets employees know what you found out and what you plan to do to address those issues.

Enact

End of February/Beginning of March (end of Month 2/Beginning of Month 3) -  Begin programming according to Wellness Plan Matrix.  The Wellness Plan Matrix can include utilizing programs and ideas from the National Health Observances calendar, the Wellness Activity Planner or the WCWV's Program and Resources link.
